Nurses Specialized in Wound, Ostomy and Continence Canada (NSWOCC) is honoured to recognize the dedication and importance of Nurses Specialized in Wound, Ostomy and Continence (NSWOCs) during National NSWOC Week from April 18-22, 2022. NSWOC Week offers the opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the outstanding contributions made by Nurses Specialized in Wound, Ostomy and Continence within the Canadian Healthcare system and internationally. This year, we want to do things differently. We would like the theme of NSWOC Week to be selected by our members. To get everyone involved, we would like to encourage you to participate in the following NSWOC Week Contest. NSWOC Week Theme Contest Description Deadline for Submissions: March 16, 2022 We would like to know what you think the theme of NSWOC Week should be for 2022. You can enter our contest as an individual, or a team of up to 5 people and submit a written description of the theme and the rationale, and a short video that reflects your understanding of the chosen theme. Please get out your devices and demonstrate how your NSWOC position and or team lives and celebrates your suggested theme. YOU CAN ENTER THE CONTEST IN ENGLISH OR FRENCH. In order to enter this contest, please submit a one-page (500 word) description of your theme and why it is important, and a short video (no more than 2 minutes) to illustrate your theme will help to solidify you as a strong contender. Winning Prize (2 total) Up to 5-NSWOCC National Conference Registrations Up to five-2022 NSWOCC national conference registrations (if you have already paid, you will be reimbursed.) One English prize and one French prize Winners will be announced during NSWOC Week View the 41st National Conference Program here! The winning theme will be used in an NSWOC Week poster, and the video will be shown during NSWOC Week on social media and will be sent out to NSWOC Members. The winner(s) will be featured in the September issue of the NSWOC Advance. Prizes are non-transferable and are only allocated to members who contributed to the production of the written submission and video. If the team is greater than 5 contributors, all team members will be acknowledged. It is up to the discretion of the team to allocate the complimentary registrations. Teamwork: shows how NSWOCs lead teams, work in a team or support a team approach Communication: the topic is presented in a clear, concise, and confident manner. Creativity: video has creative elements. Production: video quality is clear, easily visualized and the sound can be heard clearly. The theme in Canada for Black History Month 2022 is February and Forever: Celebrating Black History today and every day. Canada’s heritage has been shaped by Black people and their communities since the early 1600s with the arrival of Mathieu Da Costa, a navigator and interpreter, and the first man of African heritage to visit and live in Canada. It is important that we honour the enormous contributions made by Black people throughout Canadian history and acknowledge that those contributions continue to be made within Canadian society and healthcare daily. At Nurses Specialized in Wound, Ostomy and Continence Canada, we celebrate resiliency, innovation and determination as we work towards establishing an inclusive and diverse culture where each and every individual has the opportunity to thrive. We commit to improving wound, ostomy and continence care by promoting cultural competency, which is the ability of healthcare providers to offer services that meet the unique linguistic, social and cultural needs of the patients in our nursing specialty. We acknowledge that what happened in the past has shaped and directed where we are heading in the future. Therefore, it is of paramount importance that we recognize the importance of Black History Month in February and every day to support our path towards inclusivity and diversity and the end of anti-Black racism and discrimination in Canada.

NSWOCC is pleased to announce the launch of the Canadian Urinary Diversions Position Statement, in collaboration with the Canadian Urological Association and Urology Nurses of Canada. We would like to thank the NSWOCC Professional Development Core Program Leader Debra Johnston, MN, BScN, RN, NSWOC, WOCC(C) for her outstanding leadership in bringing this project to completion. The purpose of this national position statement is to support health care professionals, including surgeons, nurses specialized in wound, ostomy, and continence (NSWOC) and urology nurses with the delivery of standardized clinical best practices for the pre- and postoperative care management of patients undergoing a urinary diversion. Through this position statement, we have the opportunity to reinforce the fundamental principles enabling health care practitioners to educate and counsel patients on the various urinary diversion options. Position Statement Takeaways Utilize the Ottawa decision tool to assist your applicable patients in choosing between an ileal conduit and neobladder. Evaluate patient urostomy self-care skills with the Urostomy Education Scale in Table 4. Refer to Table 1 for a quick reference guide to the five urinary diversions. Follow the preoperative site marking steps in Table 2. Adopt the enhanced recovery checklist for an ileal conduit to standardize patient care and education shown in Appendix B.
